For road trips with friends and family

Road trips are better together.

Start a caravan, send a 6-letter code, and every car in the group shows up on one map.

  • Everyone heads to the same place: joining routes you there
  • Know when someone pulls off, and where
  • Weather along the whole drive, for the hour you'll be there
  • Gas, food and rest stops ahead of you, not behind
  • Badges and a trip recap to share when you arrive

Everything it does

All in the app today. Tap any feature to see what it does.

Safe driving routes

  • ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Safest, Fastest or Fuel saver

Pick what matters most. Safest takes the route with the fewest reported incidents, as long as it doesn't add more than the extra time you allow. Fuel saver picks the route likely to burn the least gas.

  • ๐ŸŽจ Safety color on every route

Each route card has a green, yellow and red bar showing how much of the trip passes streets with more police-reported incidents. Street by street in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Allentown; town by town elsewhere in Pennsylvania.

  • ๐ŸฆŒ Crash and deer warnings

A voice warns you before places where PennDOT records show crashes cluster. Deer warnings play from dusk to dawn, and all day in October to December.

  • โš ๏ธ Live road reports

Drivers report crashes, police, hazards and closures with one tap. Everyone sees them within seconds. Others confirm them, and they clear once people say they're gone.

  • ๐Ÿšจ Steers around emergencies

If police activity, a fire or a closed road is reported on your route, the app asks "Take a safer route?" and switches unless you say no.

  • ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ Weather and icy hills

Forecasts are checked for each part of the route at the time you'll actually be there. When roads may freeze, it picks the route with the fewest steep hills and warns you before each one.

  • ๐Ÿšฆ Speed and speed limits

A speedometer and the posted limit stay on screen. Where no limit is posted, it shows Pennsylvania's legal default, clearly marked as "likely".

  • ๐Ÿš‡ Keeps going in tunnels

When GPS drops out, in a tunnel or a dead zone, the dot keeps moving at your last speed and turns are still called out, because the route is already on your phone.

  • โฐ Arrive on time

Set an arrive-by time and every route shows when to leave, with spare time built in, and whether leaving now gets you there on time.

Safe walking routes

  • ๐Ÿšธ Sidewalks and crosswalks

Walking routes stick to sidewalks, footpaths and crosswalks, and stay out of alleys, driveways and parking lots.

  • ๐Ÿ’ก Lit streets at night

After dark, walking routes prefer streets the map marks as lit.

  • ๐ŸŸข Open places on the way

Green dots show shops and restaurants along your walk that are open right now, so you know where you could step inside.

  • ๐Ÿ™๏ธ Close-up 3D view

Walking switches to a close, tilted street view with buildings in 3D, so every crossing and corner is easy to see.

  • ๐Ÿ”ต Blue-light phones

Campus emergency phones near your walk show as glowing blue pins. Press one to reach campus police.

  • ๐Ÿš“ Campus police, one tap

On or near any of nearly 200 Pennsylvania college campuses, a button calls that school's police or security, plus its walking escort where there is one. Every number is checked against the school's own safety page.

  • ๐Ÿ“ฒ Walk with me link

Send someone a link so they can follow your walk live until you arrive. The link stops working 12 hours later.

Safe bike routes

  • ๐ŸŒณ Trails and bike lanes

Bike routes favor trails, bike lanes and quiet streets, shown in green on the map, and each route shows how much is on busy roads.

  • ๐Ÿ˜Œ Calmer-ride offers

If a route with much less busy road is only a little longer, the app offers it.

  • โ›ฐ๏ธ Fewer hills and rough roads

Bike routes avoid steep climbs and bad surfaces where they can, and prefer lit paths at night.

  • ๐Ÿ†˜ SOS while you ride

The emergency button stays on screen. Hold it for 3 seconds to see your address and call or text 911.

Family safety

  • ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Check on me

Pick someone you trust. They get a link that follows your trip, and they're warned if you haven't arrived by your check-in time, even if your phone dies.

  • ๐Ÿ“Š Teen-driver summaries

After each trip a teen starts in the app, a parent gets a short summary: arrived or not, minutes over the limit, hard brakes and phone use. Never a live map. Both agree first, and either can stop.

  • ๐Ÿš— Caravans

Friends driving together see each other's cars on one map, with an alert if someone pulls off.

  • ๐Ÿ“ฒ Share trip

Send a live link with your arrival time. It disappears 12 hours later.

  • ๐Ÿ… Badges and recaps

A short recap after each trip, plus badges like Night Owl and Safe Streak that make safe habits fun.

Trucks and deliveries

  • ๐Ÿ“ Routes that fit your truck

Enter your truck's height, weight, length and axles. Routes avoid low bridges, weight limits and roads closed to trucks, where the map has them. Always obey posted clearance and weight signs.

  • โ˜ฃ๏ธ Hazmat routing

Mark a hazardous load and routes avoid roads where hazmat isn't allowed, where the map records it.

  • โฐ Leave-by times

Set the delivery time and see when to leave, with spare time built in, and a warning if leaving now would make you late.

  • ๐Ÿ”” Earlier warnings

Turn warnings come earlier in Truck mode, because a truck needs more room to slow down and change lanes.

  • ๐Ÿ“‹ Dispatcher view

Drivers join one caravan. A dispatcher opens the dispatch page with its code and sees every truck's delivery, arrival time and due time as On time, At risk or Late, with a ready-made text for the customer when one is running late.

Along the way

  • โ›ฝ Gas and EV charging

Find gas stations, chargers and rest stops ahead of you on the route, not behind you.

  • โ˜• Food and coffee

Restaurants, coffee, groceries and convenience stores within 5, 10 or 15 miles along your route.

  • ๐Ÿ’Š Pharmacies and hospitals

The nearest pharmacies, hospitals and clinics along the way when you need them.

  • โšก 30+ kinds, instant

Results come from our own weekly copy of Pennsylvania's map, so they appear right away even when public map servers are busy.

For parents of new drivers

Teen driving, without the spying.

Questions

Is Hopalong free?

Yes. Safe routes, SOS, Check on me, road reports and campus safety are free. An optional Family plan with extra parent features is coming; it's free while we test.

Does it sell my location?

No. Your location stays on your phone unless you choose to share it. No ads, no trackers. See the privacy page.

Does SOS call 911 for me?

No. It opens your phone's own call or text with your address ready. You place the call.

Is a "safe" route guaranteed?

No route is. Colors show reported incidents and crashes. Always follow signs and trust your instincts.

Can we road trip together?

Yes. One person starts a caravan and shares a 6-letter code. Everyone who joins sees each other's cars on one map and gets an alert if someone pulls off. Sharing stops when you leave the caravan.
