Privacy and terms

Our promise
We never sell or share your location or your trips, show ads, or use advertising or analytics trackers.
What stays on your phone
Your location while you use the app, saved places, your Check on me contact, and your settings. Clearing this site's data in your browser deletes them.
What reaches our database (Supabase, United States)
- An anonymous account: a random ID, no name, email or phone number.
- Road reports: the kind of problem, where and when. Who made a report is never shown. Reports expire within hours to days and are deleted a day after expiring.
- Caravans (only if you join one): the name you type and your live position, visible only to that caravan. Positions are deleted when you leave, pause or the caravan ends; caravans end after 2 hours with nobody sharing, or after 24 hours.
- Shared trips and Check on me (only if you start one): destination, arrival and check-in times, and your position during the trip, visible to anyone with the link. The trip disappears 12 hours after it starts.
- Family (only if a teen and parent both agree to link): the names you each type and, after each trip the teen starts in the app, a summary visible only to the two of you: start and end times, destination name, whether they arrived, distance, and for driving, time over the speed limit, hard brakes and screen use while moving. No locations or routes. Summaries are deleted after 90 days, or when either of you removes the link.
Services that see some of your trip
To work, the app asks these services for maps, directions, search results and weather: OpenFreeMap (map), Valhalla on the FOSSGIS server (directions: your start, stops and destination; while driving, also the route ahead, to look up speed limits), Photon by komoot (search, and your street address when you open the ๐ Emergency screen), Open-Meteo (weather along the route) and the US Census (address lookup). They receive those requests and handle them under their own policies.

Problem reports
"Something wrong?" reports go only to whoever you send them to, and never include your location.
Terms of use
- You must be 13 or older to use Hopalong.
- This is a test version provided as is. Directions, colors, warnings and places can be wrong or out of date. Always follow road signs, signals and traffic laws, and don't handle your phone while driving.
- Hopalong is not an emergency service and doesn't contact police or 911. Check on me only alerts the person you choose, and the ๐ Emergency button only opens your phone's own call or text, which you send yourself. In an emergency, call 911.
- Route colors show reported incidents, not how safe a place or its people are. Fewer reports doesn't guarantee safety.
- Make reports truthfully. Don't use the app to harass, follow or track anyone, or share someone's location without their consent.
- We may remove reports, change or stop features, and update these terms; we'll show the date of the last change here.
